Chronicle of the Flickering Flame
The Sundering (~24,000 years ago)
Legends among the elves during this time suggested that they had originated from a place beyond Toril instead of being created by the gods of this realm. They must have migrated, or been expelled, from another plane of existence that contained a perfect, verdant paradise more suitable for their proud race. And so they sought to recreate this fabled utopia and transform Toril into a place fit for elves and the other races besides. So began a High Magic ritual they called Ever’Sakkatien. A world-altering spell that required both the expertise and the sacrifice of the most powerful mages of all the civilized races. The ritual was both a success and a resounding failure. As the final moments of the ritual concluded tremendous earthquakes wracked the continent, tearing the land apart. People of all races died in staggering numbers and whole civilizations where swallowed by the earth or drowned beneath the heaving seas. The face of Toril changed dramatically, now resembling the world as we know it today. And in the isolated center of the Trackless Sea rose the Isle of Evermeet, a wondrous and idyllic kingdom of untold splendor and mysterious magic. It was a microcosm that represented everything the elves had hoped Toril would become. But now the elves had become hated and distrusted by the surviving races and many were forced to retreat to Evermeet where it became a fortress nation that barred all others from its shores. This event became known as The Sundering.
