The sprawling metropolis of Neverwinter, the Jewel of the North, was once viewed as a center of culture and refinement unmatched in all of Faerûn. That, however, has long passed. Terrible calamities have fallen upon the city, reducing it to lawlessness and ruin. First, the Wailing Death plague ravaged the populace. Then, the King of Shadows rose against the city, threatening Faerûn itself. Finally, Mt. Hotenow to the north erupted causing an unimaginable cataclysm. A great chasm had split the city in two, killing thousands and wreaking terrible destruction. The entire royal line of Alagondar perished in an instant, leaving the city leaderless. But, that was not the end of the troubles. Hordes of demon-spawn emerged from the fiery depths of the chasm to launch an assault on the city. It was all the people of Neverwinter could do just to stay alive. And for decades the brave and stalwart persisted.

Eventually, the deposed Open Lord of Waterdeep, Dagult Neverember, arrived in the city with a band of mercenaries in tow. He took control of the city and sealed the chasm. Dagult then proclaimed himself Lord Protector and has been working to rebuild the city. Many distrust Neverember however, suspecting him of some nefarious ulterior motive.

Today, Neverwinter is still a dangerous place wracked with poverty, violence and starvation. But, there is hope and every day citizens work to heal their broken city.
